Spark Plug , Requirement and Function of spark plug , Construction

                      -: Spark Plug :-

Spark Plug is an important part of S.I. engine . It is used in petrol engines to burn the fuel in the combustion chamber .

Requirement of Spark Plug :-

A spark plug must have following requirements -
1- The spark plug must have a gap between its electrodes .
2- No Part of spark plug must ever become hot enough to load pre- ignition .
3- Firing end of spark plug must have adequate resistance.
4- Spark plug should be able to withstand fluctuating temperature and pressure .
5- Fitted spark plug in engine must be gas tight .

Function of Spark Plug :-
The main function of a spark plug is to conduct the high potential from the ignition system into the combustion chamber . It also provides the proper gap across which spark is produced by applying high voltage to ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber .

-: Construction Of Spark Plug :-
The parts of spark plug are given as -
1- Terminal
2- Insulator
3- Center Electrode
4- Seals
5- Metal Case / Shell
6- Earth Electrode
7- Gasket

1- Terminal :-
It is provided to connect the spark plug to the ignition system .

2- Insulator :-

It is major function is to provide mechanical support and electrical insulation for the central electrode . It is generally made of ceramic materials .

3- Center Electrode :-
It is connected to the terminal through an internal wire and used to reduce the emission generated from the sparking .

4- Seals :-
These are required to ensure there is no leakage from the combustion chamber .

5- Metal Case / Shell :-

These withstand the torque of lighting the plug , serves to remove heat from the insulator and pass it on to the cylinder head and acts as the ground for the sparks passing through the central electrode to the side electrode .

6- Earth Electrode :-
Earth electrode are provided  to increase heat conduction . These are made from high nickel steel .

7- Gasket :-
An internal gasket is used to make the insulator pressure tight in the body and for making the joint between the combustion chamber and the shell body , an external gasket is used .
