-: Power diode :-
Power diode is a two layer two terminal PN junction semiconductor device it has one PN junction formed by alloying diffusing or epitaxial growth the two terminal diode as shown in figure.

V-I characteristics of power diode-
- When anode is positive with respect to cathode diode is said to be forward wise.
- With increasing the source voltage vs from zero value, initially diode current is zero.
- when the cathode is positive with respect to anode the diode is said to be reverse biased. In reverse biased condition of the diode a small reverse current called leakage current of microorganism ampere flows
- the leakage current increases slowly with the reverse voltage until breakdown or avalanche voltage is reached.
Type of power Diodes-
Diode are classified according to their reverse recovery characteristics. There are three type of power diodes-
1- General purpose diode
2-Fast recovery diode
3- Schottky diode
2-Fast recovery diode
3- Schottky diode
These are used in battery charging electric traction electroplating welding for uninterrupted power supply (UPS).
2-Fast recovery diode- These diode have load reverse recovery time of about 5 microsecond or less. Their current rating different from about 1A to several ampere and range of voltage rating is from 50V to about 3kV
These are used in chopper, commutation circuit, switchingmode power supplies etc.
3- Schottky diode- This class of diode uses metal to semiconductor junction for rectification purpose instead of PN junction. These are characterized why very fast recovery time and low forward voltage drop.
They have reverse voltage rating of 100V and forward current rating different from 1A to 300A. It is using in high frequency instrumentation and switching power supplies.
