Production System , Types of Production System , Features of various Production Systems

   -: Production System :-
A  Production system is defined as - A system which used in industry to produce or create goods or services by various processes and resources , is known as production system .

-: Types of Production System :-
Production system mainly are of following two types -
1- Intermittent System
2- Continuous System

1- Intermittent System :- A production system in which goods are manufactured specially to full-fill orders made by customers rather than for stock , is known as Intermittent System .
In other words , those production system where the production facilities are flexible enough to handle a wide variety of products and sizes are called intermittent systems .

Features of An Intermittent System :- An intermittent system has the following features -
1- In intermittent system , demand can be discontinuous .
2- All operational stages may not be balanced in intermittent system .
3- Intermittent system needs high investment .
4- Elaborate sequencing and scheduling is required in intermittent system .
5- In intermittent system planning , routing and scheduling changes with fresh orders .
6- In intermittent system , storage is necessary at each stage of production process .
7- Intermittent System can adjust to new situation and specification .
8- Inspection is not in line with production in Intermittent system .

-: Types of Intermittent System :-
Intermittent System are of following two types -
(i)- Job Production / Project type Production
(ii)- Batch Production

(i)- Job Production / Project Type Production System :- An intermittent system in which the goods are produced to definite customer's orders is known as job production intermittent system .
Ex- Ship building , Dam Construction etc .
(ii)- Batch Production :- An intermittent system in which the items are processed in lots or batches unlike job type system where one item is produced during each production run is known as batch production intermittent system .
Ex- Biscuit , Medicines etc .

2- Continuous System :- A system in which the items are produced for the stocks and not for specific orders is known as continuous production system .

Features of Continuous Production System :- A continuous production system has the following features -
1- There must be continuity of demand in continuous production system .
2- The product must be standardized in continuous production system .
3- In continuous production system , material should be as per the specifications and delivered in time .
4- All operational stages in the process must be balanced in continuous production system .
5- In continuous production system work must confirm to quality standards .
6- Appropriate plant and equipment must be balanced in continuous production system .
7- In continuous production system maintenance must be by anticipation and not by default .
8- Inspection must be in line with production in continuous production system .

-: Types of Continuous Production System :-
Continuous Production System are also of following two types -
(i)- Mass Production System
(ii)- Process Production System

(i)- Mass Production System :- A continuous production system in which items are produced in large quantities and much emphasis is not given to consumers orders is known as mass production continuous system .
In mass production continuous system uniform and uninterrupted flow of material is maintained through predetermined sequence of operations .
Ex- Newspaper and Magazines etc .

(ii)- Process Production :- A continuous production system in which stress on automation in production process and the volume of production is very high is known as process production continuous system .
Ex - Refined Oil , Chemicals , Plastics etc .
