        -: Supercharging :-
Supercharging is defined as - A process / method which increases the pressure or density of air supplied to an internal combustion engine is known as supercharging and the used air compressor for this operation is known as supercharger .
Since the energy produced by an engine depends upon the amount of the fuel burnt efficiently and by the supercharging more amount of fuel can be burned in the same cylinder space .

Purpose of supercharging :- The purpose of supercharging is to raise the volumetric efficiency above that value which can be obtained by normal aspiration . Supercharging tends to increase the possibility of detonation is a S.I. ( Spark Ignition ) engine and lessen the possibility in a C.I. ( Compressed Ignition ) engine .

Objectives of Supercharging :- The objectives of supercharging are as follows -
1- Supercharging use to increase the power output for a given weight and bulk of the engine .
2- Supercharging use to compensate for the loss of power due to altitude .

3- Supercharging used to maintain power output .
4-  Supercharging used to obtain more power from an existing engine .

Advantages of Supercharging :- The advantages of supercharging are given as -
1- Supercharging increases the power output .
2- Greater induction of charge mass .
3- Better atomoization of fuel .
4- Better mixing of fuel and air .

5- More complete and smoother combustion .
6- Reduces exhaust smoke .
7- Increases overall efficiency .

Effect of Supercharging :- There are following effects of supercharging on the performance of the engine -
1- The mechanical efficiencies of supercharged engines are slightly better than the naturally aspirated engines .
2- The power output of a supercharged engines is higher than its naturally aspirated counterpart .
3- Due to reduced delay , a mechanically supercharged otto engine almost have specific fuel consumption  higher than a naturally aspirated engine .
