             -: Air Cooling System :-
Air Cooling System is defined as - The cooling system in which , heat is carried away by the air flowing over and around the cylinder is known as Air Cooling System .

Construction and Working of Air Cooling System :- In air cooling system fins are extended surface to increase the heat transfer rate between the two medium generally one medium is metal surface and other is air . Since heat transfer coefficient between the metal surface and other is air . Since heat transfer coefficient between the metal surface and air is low so heat transfer between these medium is also low . For increasing the heat transfer rate , the surface area has to be increased by providing the fins . Since the heat is dissipated gradually , so temperature of fin decreases from roots to its tip .

The temperature difference between the tip and ambient air is less than that at the root , so heat transfer rate at tip of the fin is also less than that at the root . Due to this reason , fins are generally made of gradually decreasing cross section .
In air cooling system , fins are cast on the cylinder head and cylinder barrel which provide additional conductive and radiating surface . The fins are arranged at right angles to cylinder axis .

Advantages of Air Cooling System :- An air cooling system has the following advantages -
1- By air cooling system , the design of the engine becomes simpler as no water jackets are required .
2- No danger of coolant leakage etc in air cooling system .
3- In air cooling system , the engine is not subjected to freezing troubles etc .
4- The weight per B.P.( Break Power ) of the air cooled engine is less than that of water -cooled engine .
5- In case of air cooling system , an engine does not require external components e.g. radiator , headers , tank etc .
6- Installation of air-cooled engines is easier than water-cooled engines .
7- The control of cooling system is much easier than in water-cooled system .
8- An air-cooled engine can take up some degree of damage . A broken fin does not affect much while a hole in the radiator may stop a water-cooled engine .
9- The warm-up performance of air -cooled engine is better than water-cooled engine .
10 - Less carbon deposits occurs in air cooled system engines due to high mean cylinder temperature .

Disadvantages of Air Cooling System Engines :- An air cooling system has the following disadvantages -
1- In air cooling systems the movement of air is noisy .
2- Air cooling system gives non-uniform cooling .
3- The output of air-cooled engine is less than that of a liquid-cooled engine .
4- The maintenance of air cooling system is not easy .
5- Air cooling system engines have smaller useful compression ratio .
6- The Volumetric efficiency of an air-cooled engine is lower due to high cylinder head temperatures .
Applications of Air Cooling System :- An air cooling system is used in the following engines-
1- Small engines and aircraft engines .
2- Industrial and Agricultural engines .
